False fruits are a type of fruit formed from other parts of the flower as well as the ovary. So apples are called false fruits.

In true fruits, fertilized ovary of a flower gives rise to the fruit. Fruits derived from the ovary along with other accessory floral parts like thalamus, pedicel, perianth, etc. are called false fruits. Apple is formed from the thalamus which is the swollen structure at the tip of the flower stalk. Cashew fruit is formed from the pedicel, which is the stalk of a flower.
