The liquefaction of gas take place when the intermolecular attraction among molecules becomes very high. As a result, the molecules of gas will come closer and bind together to form a liquid state.
The conditions for liquefaction of gases are:
i) Low temperature
ii) High pressure
By using either of the above condition, intermolecular forces among molecules can be increased.
The effect of temperature on liquefaction of gases is very important.
At higher temperature, liquefaction of gases is difficult. As the molecules of a gas is present at large distance, resulting in weak intermolecular attraction. To liquify the gas higher pressure will be required.

Critical temperature: Critical temperature of a gas may be defined as that temperature above which gas cannot be liquefied, however high the applied pressure may be.

Critical pressure: Critical pressure of a gas may be defined as that minimum pressure which must be applied on a gas at its critical temperature to liquefy it.
