If caste and religious sentiments are allowed in elections, it will hamper the structure and the functioning of the democracy. People of the country will be divided on caste and religious basis, and other important issues such as health, education, and development will be ignored. The rights and freedom of the people who have little contribution to the population of the country may be violated, and their demands may be ignored.

The framers of the constitution of India had deliberately defined India as a secular state so that in the future, there would be no division on the basis of religion. Also, there are several acts passed by the Parliament of India, such as the Representation of people act, which ensures that during the election, no candidate can make promises which are exclusively for a particular caste or religion. For the proper functioning of a democracy, it is very important to value every religion and caste in the country without any discrimination.
