The animals reproduce to maintain the survival of the species. Animals that can produce a large number of eggs are usually oviparous. They produce many eggs so that if some eggs get perished it can make sure the survival rate of the embryo is not affected. Most of the invertebrates, some fishes, amphibians and birds etc. are oviparous animals that lay eggs outside the body.

The animals that give birth to young ones are called viviparous e.g. mammals except for Echidna and Ornithorhynchus. The embryo in them develops inside the body and is safe from environmental threats. They also possess mammary glands which secrete milk for the development of young ones outside the body.

Ovoviviparous animals are the animals in which the embryo develops inside the egg that remains inside the mother's body until it is hatched. Some snakes, sharks, insects, rays are examples of such animals. All these types of developments are meant to provide a better environment to the developing embryo to increase the chances of survival as per the species adaptations.
