You all must have heard about the sheep “DOLLY”. So, why we know it? and What reminds you when you hear this name? Yes! You guessed right it is a cloned sheep. It is the carbon copy of its parent sheep. The carbon copy is often called a clone. In biotechnology, a clone means a genetically identical organisms.

In the process of gene cloning, a piece of DNA fragment or a gene is inserted into a bacterial cell or the plasmid DNA, where desirable DNA will be multiplied with the host cell division.

Basic steps in gene cloning are:
i. Isolation of desired DNA or gene fragment from an organism by using restriction enzymes.
ii. Insertion of the DNA fragment into a suitable vector (Plasmid) to make rDNA or recombinant DNA.
iii. Transfer of rDNA into the bacterial host cell.
iv. Selection and multiplication of recombinant host cell to get a clone
v. Expression of the cloned gene in the host cell.
This technique is also used for the production of several enzymes, hormones and vaccines can be used.
