Connective tissue is the tissue that acts as packing material, provides strength and support to the body parts in addition to connecting different body parts. Based on the type of matrix present in it, the connective tissue can be classified into different types.

In the areolar connective tissue, the matrix contains two types of fibres namely white fibres and yellow fibres. White fibres are made up of collagen and provide the tensile strength to this tissue. Yellow fibres are made up of elastin and provide elasticity.

Four different types of cells called fibroblast, macrophages, mast cells and fat cells are also present. Fibroblasts are the large flat cells having branching processes. These secrete the ground substance of the tissue. Mast cells secrete histamine and heparin. Fat cells store fat and the macrophages are the phagocytic cells.
