We can show that oxygen is necessary for burning by the following experiment.

Material required: Two beakers with different volumes, three candles and a matchbox.

Procedure: Take three candles and light them and fix them on the table keeping the distance between the three candles. Place two beakers over the two candles and observe.

Observation: You will observe that the candle covered with a small beaker goes off first then the second candle covered with a large beaker goes off but the candle uncovered burns continuously.

Conclusion: The candle used all oxygen present in the beaker for burning. When all oxygen is used in the combustion, the flame goes off. But the candle uncovered with a beaker gets a continuous supply of oxygen therefore, it burns continuously. This shows that oxygen is necessary for burning.
