DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. It is the genetic material of all the organisms that pass on the characters from parents to the offsprings. It was first isolated by Friedrich Miescher from the nuclei of pus cells. The structure of the DNA is as follows:

It is a double -stranded molecule that consist of two chains which run in an antiparallel direction.

The successive units are joined by phosphodiester bonds in each strand.

The sugar-phosphate backbones are located on outside the molecule.

The two chains are spirally coiled and form right-handed double helix.

It consists of nitrogen bases : adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine.

The two nitrogen bases are connected through H-bonds.
