Write a critical account of the various ways in which the nine elements in the iron, cobalt and nickel groups have been grouped together for comparison purposes.

We can see according to their atomic number, the elements are arranged in periodic table. They are arranged in same group according to their similar properties. In iron, nickel and cobalt groups, we can see the atomic size it decreases but, in $4 th$ and $5 th$ period it is almost similar. They have the same trend of ionisation energy. There are number of $d -$ electrons increasing from left to right. Then, the elements iron, cobalt and nickel are arranged in same period.

Fe, Ru and Os all are formed the octahedral compounds. All the 3rd and 4th and 5th group has the electropositive character. All Ni, Pd and Pt have the same chemical properties of formation of ML₄ Complex. All the 3rd, 4th and 5th group can form the alloys. and can be used in catalyst in different reactions.
