Under the influence of Greeks, the Gandhara School of Art emerged at Gandhara. It was one of the famous schools of art in Ancient India. It is also known as Graeco-Buddhist School of art.

The style and images of Gandhara School of Art reflected the distinct features of Greeks. The school flourished both under the Indo-Greeks and the Kushanas.

The Gandhara and Mathura School of art produced the images of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas were the new elements added to Buddhism during this period.

The Gandhara school of Art flourished along with Mathura School of Art by Kanishka, the Kushana ruler. Taxila, Jalalabad, Hadda are some of the main centres where the art pieces of Gandhara School have been found.

This school of art is related to Mahayana Buddhism, where Buddha was no longer shown symbolically. Prior to Mahayana Buddhism, Buddha was shown attaining enlightenment through a symbolic peepal tree, but then Buddha was shown in the form of Human Images.
