Elections are the most important tool of democracy. In a democratic country, all adult persons have the right to vote to elect their representatives. Elections are how the people of a democratic country participate in making the government in their country.

Usually, it is a kind of indirect participation because the people elect a representative who takes part in governance on behalf of the entire community. If the government does not perform well, the people can change it in the next election. So we can say that people elect a government and have an impact on the policy-making of the government.

In the early days, men and women did not have equal rights in this regard. New Zealand became the first country that granted equal voting rights to all men and women in the country. After New Zealand, many democratic countries provided equal voting rights to their citizens.
