The Pallava Dynasty ruled over a large part of south India (Tamil Nadu and parts of Andhra Pradesh) between the $2$ nd and $9$ th century AD. Kanchipuram, near Chennai, was the capital of the Pallavas. Their kingdom extended up to the Kavery Delta. The Pallavas and the Chalukyas frequently fought with each other to assert their supremacy in the region. Capital cities of both kingdoms by each other were especially attacked because they were prosperous towns.

One of Pallava's rulers named Vishnugopavarman was defeated by Samudragupta. The Pallavas became very powerful in South India when a new dynasty was established by Simhavarman in the last quarter of the $6$ th century A.D. Amoung the Pallava rulers, Mahendraverman and his son, Narsimhavarman I were the most famous. Narsimhavarman I captured Vatapi (Badami) and adopted the title of Vatapikonda or 'the conqueror of Vatapi'.
