The endosperm forms the surrounding tissue of the growing embryo. The endosperm is the result of double fertilization. Two male gametes are present in pollen grain out of these two one gamete fuses with female gamete and form the zygote and the second male gamete fuse with the central cell containing two polar nuclei, which results in the formation of triploid endosperm.

There are three types of endosperms. These are as follows:

Nuclear endosperm - Cell division present in this type of endosperm is free nuclear cell division; formed nuclei are pushed towards periphery results in the formation of the large vacuole in the center. Example- coconut endosperm

Cellular endosperm - In this type of endosperm, cell wall formation follows each cell division results in many segments in the endosperm. Example- Petunia and Datura plants.

Helobial endosperm - In this type of endosperm cell wall formation follows the first cell division, but the subsequent divisions do not lead to the cell wall formation. Example- grape hyacinth.
