Biodiversity can be conserved by protecting its whole ecosystem. Two basic approaches for the conservation of biodiversity are; In-situ conservation and Ex-situ conservation.

In-situ Conservation: In involves the protection of endangered species of plants and animals within their natural habitat. These are of different types.

(a) Biodiversity Hotspots: These are the regions with high species richness and high degree endemism. There are 36 hotspots in the world. In India, there are three hot spots i.e., Western ghats and Sri Lanka, Indo-Burma, and Himalaya.

(b) Protected areas: India has 14 biosphere reserves, 90 national parks, and 448 wildlife sanctuaries for the protection of wildlife.

(c) Sacred Groves: These are the patches of forests that are set aside for worship. All trees and wildlife in this given area are protected by rural communities.

Ex-situ conservation: It involves the protection of endangered species by removing them from the natural habitat and placing species under special care. India has 35 botanical gardens and 275 zoological parks for the protection of plants and animals.
