Many societies in the Indian subcontinent did not adhere to the Brahmanas' social rules and rituals. They were also not divided into numerous unequal classes. These groups are commonly referred to as tribes. Each tribe's members were bound together by familial ties. Agriculture provided a living for many tribes. Some were herders or hunter-gatherers.

They most frequently combined these pursuits in order to fully utilise the local natural resources. A few tribes were migratory, living in different locations. A tribe shared control over the land and pastures, dividing them up among the households in accordance with their own set of customs.
