India's partition was announced in $1947$ , and it led to the creation of Pakistan for Muslims and India for the rest of the people. Though the partition was declared on a religious basis, in India, people from every religion were allowed to stay. After India's partition was declared, the Muslims prepared to depart the city and leave for Pakistan. Simultaneously, Hindus from Pakistan flocked into the city.

Because Delhi was the capital, most Pakistani migrants decided to come here. Many Hindu and Sikh refugees arrived in Delhi. As a result, Delhi became a city of refugees. The majority of migrants came from Pakistan's Punjab province. They were mostly traders, merchants, and small business owners. They first stayed in refugee camps. Later, the government set aside some areas for the refugees. Refugee settlements developed over there. One such refugee settlement was Mukherjee Nagar.

The partition altered Delhi's social structure. The old Urdu-based culture gave way to Punjabi culture. Food and clothing styles evolved significantly. As a result, Delhi underwent a significant transition.
