The aim of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) is the conservation of plant and animal species globally. A list known as IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is also maintained by IUCN. The species are divided into nine categories in this list. The Red Data Book is a catalogue which is published by IUCN. Rare species or the species that are in danger are listed in this book.

The categorisation listed by IUCN under Red List of Threatened Species are as follows: Extinct (EX) and Extinct in the Wild (EV): Species that no longer exists on the Earth are called extinct species. Critically Endangered (CR): A critically endangered species is one that has been categorised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Endangered (EN): Endangered species are the ones at very high risk of extinction in the wild.

Vulnerable (VU): Vulnerable species are the ones at high risk of extinction in the wild. Remaining categories include Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD) and Non-Evaluated (NE).
