The diaphragm is the most important muscle of respiration and is present as a partition in between the thoracic and abdominal cavities. It is also known as phrenic muscles. The diaphragm is dome-shaped and is attached to ribs and vertebral column with its peripheral ends. When the muscles of the diaphragm contract, the central dome portion of it becomes flattens by pulling downward which enlarges the vertical dimension of the thoracic cavity.

Inspiration commences by the contraction of the diaphragm increasing the diameter of the chest. The descent of the diaphragm is accompanied by displacement of abdominal contents downwards associated with relaxation of abdominal muscles. During expiration the diaphragm relaxes, its dome moves upwards aided by contraction of the abdominal muscles pushing the diaphragm upwards. This results in the expulsion of air from the lungs during expiration.
