Write a short note on erythrocytes and leucocytes, including their types in detail.

Blood is a fluid connective tissue with two components- plasma and formed elements. The formed elements include RBCs, WBCs and platelets. RBCs are circular, biconcave and non-nucleated. The synthesis of RBCs or erythropoiesis takes place in red bone marrow.

Iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid are essential for the synthesis of RBCs. The life span of RBCs is 120 days, following which they break down in spleen. The destruction or breakdown of RBCs which leads to the release of their contents in the surrounding fluid is called haemolysis. So, spleen is called as the graveyard of RBCs.

WBCs or leucocytes are irregular shaped cells with nucleus and all membrane bound organelles. Their count rise during infections in body. They lack haemoglobin pigment, hence, they are colourless. The two forms of leucocytes are as follows:

(i) Agranulocytes: Granules are not found in the cytoplasm of these cells. They include monocytes and lymphocytes.

(ii) Granulocytes: Granules are found in the cytoplasm of these cells. They include basophils, eosinophils and neutrophils.

Differential leucocyte count (DLC) means detecting the number of different kind of leucocytes. The normal DLC is as follows:

Neutrophils- 60-65%

Lymphocytes- 20-25%

Monocytes- 6-8%

Eosinophils- 2-3%

Basophils- 0.5-1%
