The pancreas is a heterocrine gland whose exocrine part secretes enzymes important for digestion, and its endocrine part secretes hormones that carry out various functions. The endocrine part of the pancreas contains tissues called islets of Langerhans that constitutes different cells, such as alpha cells, beta cells, delta cells, and pp cells. The beta cells produce and secrete a hormone called insulin. Insulin is a 51 amino acid-containing peptide hormone released when the blood glucose is high. Insulin decreases the blood glucose level by promoting its uptake in insulin-sensitive cells. It also promotes glycogenesis and helps in the storage of glucose in the form of glycogen in the liver. The under secretion of insulin causes diabetes mellitus, which is characterised by elevated glucose level in the blood that leads to other complications such as weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, glycosuria, extreme hunger, etc.
