Seed dormancy is a resting condition with reduced metabolism of the seed under unfavourable conditions of germination. Certain viable seeds fail to germinate even when the conditions are favourable. It is due to some internal factors. The causes of dormancy and its release mechanism vary in different seeds.
The main causes of dormancy are:
Dormancy due to seed coat: In certain seeds, the seed coat is extremely hard and tough. It offers mechanical resistance to germination. It is impermeable to water and oxygen. The removal of the seed coat is the method to overcome dormancy.

Dormancy due to immature embryo: Dispersal of some seeds takes place when their embryos are not mature.
Dormancy due to the presence of chemicals and growth regulators: The chemicals such as coumarin, phenolic acid, etc., and hormone like abscisic acid present in embryo, endosperm and dead coat induce dormancy.
