The Kheda Satyagraha was the second satyagraha movement organized by Mahatma Gandhi, the first being the Champaran Satyagraha of $1917$ . It took place in the Kheda district of Gujarat, British India. The increase in taxation levied on the people of Kheda led to this satyagraha. The people were already suffering due to various famines in the region and the increased taxation added to their burdens. Gandhi called for the satyagraha and submitted a petition on behalf of the peasants for the waiving off of the taxation that year. The government in Bombay, however, refused to accept this petition and forced the peasants to pay taxation. The non-payment of taxation would lead to the seizure of property and cattle. Despite this threat, the peasants under the guidance of Gandhi did not back from the satyagraha and did not resist arrest and the seizure of property by the government. This made a number of Gujaratis sympathetic to the cause of the peasants and they supported them much to the disregard of the British government. The result was that the government decided to reach a compromise. The peasants were waved off the taxation for the current year and the next. All the properties that were seized by the government were also returned.
