In a democracy, the government has the responsibility to promote the development of the country. Along with it, the opposition parties play a major role as well by making sure that the government takes no authoritarian decision that can go against the people. The opposition is able to keep a check on the government by:

Criticising the government- It criticizes the government through debates, passing motions in legislature and asking questions.

Cooperation - The opposition has to make sure to provide constructive criticism to the government and also provide support to the positive measures taken by it.

Checks the Authoritarianism- Often in a democracy, the government turns authoritarian and misuses the powers. The opposition makes sure that the government does not misuse its authority.

Alternative government - When a government in power loses its majority, then the opposition may provide an alternative government.
