The gait of animals can be defined as the pattern of the movement of a body part associated with its locomotion. Different animals use different body parts to move from one place to another. The manner in which animals move is called the gait of animals. Common examples of gait are- running, crawling, flying, swimming, etc.

We can differentiate the gait of different animals based on their body parts used and also based on their habitat.

Birds can fly using their wings as they are adapted to the aerial habitat. Fishes can swim in the water by using powerful muscles and fins. Higher groups of animals like lions, zebras, humans, have bones and muscles that help in movement on land. Some lower terrestrial animals like earthworm and snails only depend on the contraction and relaxation of their muscles for locomotion.
