Prophase I consist of the crossing over and recombination of genetic material between non sister chromatids that results in the genetically dissimilar, haploid daughter cells. It comprises Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis stages.

Pachytene
After the synapse formation, a bivalent forms where a chromatid of one pair is attached to the chromatid in a homologous chromosomes and here crossing over occurs. Later, the synapses snap completing the process of transfer of the genetic information. This results in the variation in genetic material because throughout the chromosome there has been an exchanged of the mother and father's genetic material. Next, the two sister chromatids separate from each other, but the homologous chromosomes remain attached. The synaptonemal complex is complete, allowing chiasma to form that allows the crossing over alleles to occur as this is a process.

Diplotene

When the synaptonemal complex break down initiates, the chromosome pairs begin to move apart. They are unable to move far away from each other as they remain attached by the chiasmata. The repelling characteristic of the two chromosomes creates a primary shift towards the opposite poles of the spindle apparatus, which will be completed during the prometaphase 1 that follows Prophase I.
