S-shaped or sigmoid growth curve :

Characteristics of such curve are initial lag phase followed by positive acceleration phase, exponential phase, negative acceleration phase and stationary phase one after the other.

Lag phase — Phase showing adaptation of a small population to the new environment.

Positive Acceleration phase _ Rise in population takes place at a slow rate.

Exponential phase _ Steep rise in curve is seen due to rapid increase in population to its full potential. Under favourable environmental conditions, sufficient food supply, lack of predator and competition.

Negative acceleration phase _ Increase in resistance from environment and competition for food and space, slows down growth rate and increases rate of mortality.

Stationary phase _ With availability of resources population remains stable. A stable population is said to be in equilibrium or at saturation level.

J_ shaped growth curve:
