Gibberellin (GA) is a member of naturally occurring tetracyclic diterpenoid carboxylic acids. It is a chief plant hormone that promotes stem elongation, influences germination, removes seed dormancy, influence flowering, flower development, etc. The major functions of this hormone are given below:

Gibberellin influences seed germination by removing the dormancy of seeds.

It helps the formation of seedless fruits by parthenocarpy.

Gibberellins in appropriate quantity cause the formation of male flowers, whereas a low concentration of gibberellins favours the formation of female flowers.

Gibberellic acid influences leaves, flowers and fruits to increase in size.

Gibberellin increases the number and size of the cells and promoting internode growth.

It includes in the synthesis of hydrolytic enzymes such as amylase, protease, etc., during germination.

When gibberellin is exogenously applied, it leads to flowering induction in long-day plants under conditions of short days.
