Write about the relation between heredity and variation in asexual reproduction as well as sexual reproduction.

Sexual reproduction produces variation in the offspring due to crossing over and fusion of gametes. Whereas in asexual reproduction, it does not lead to major variations in a population as there is a simple cell division of the parent cell to produce daughter cells.

Due to sexual reproduction, the genes get mixed up as the chromosomes are received from both sperm and egg of the parents. This mixing up maintains the chromosome number in the zygote of the species as well as brings variations in the offspring. Hence genetic characters borne by the parents in any organism is said to be inherited in its children. In the case of asexual reproduction, no exchange of chromosomes occurs, rather a chromosome replicated in the parent cell is passed on to the daughter cells thus allowing inheritance of characters borne by parents.

Due to this reason, an offspring of an individual after sexual reproduction may show similarity with its parents, whereas in asexual reproduction the offsprings produced will be a clone of their parents.

The other factors of variations like the environmental factors- light, temperature, humidity, water scarcity and availability of food, affect the offsprings of an individual produced through sexual reproduction. Daughter cells produced through asexual reproduction do not show any or few variations due to environmental factors.
