Write an activity to show the reaction of acid with metal carbonates and metal hydrogen carbonate salts.

Aim: To show the reaction of an acid with metal hydrogen carbonates and metal carbonates:

Material required: Two test tubes, Sulphuric acid, delivery tube and lime water.

Procedure:

Take a small amount of metal carbonate(we have taken zinc carbonate) in test tube A and metal bi-carbonate(we have taken sodium hydrogen carbonate) in test tube B.

Pour a few drops of sulphuric acid in both the test tubes

Pass the evolved gas in both test tube through the lime water with the help of a delivery tube.

Observation:

When acid is added to metal carbonate and metal hydrogen carbonate, you will notice the evolution of colourless gas in both the test tubes.

When this gas is passed through lime water, it turns milky.

Reaction in test tube A:
$\underset{Zinc carbonate}{{ZnCO}_{3}} + \underset{Dilute}{\underset{Sulphuric acid}{H_{2} {SO}_{4}}} \to \underset{Salt}{\underset{Zinc sulphate}{{ZnSO}_{4}}} + \underset{Water}{H_{2} O} + \underset{Carbon dioxide}{{CO}_{2}}$

Reaction in test tube B:
$\underset{Sodium hydrogen carbonate}{2 {NaHCO}_{3}} + \underset{Dilute}{\underset{Sulphuric acid}{H_{2} {SO}_{4}}} \to \underset{Salt}{\underset{Sodium sulphate}{{Na}_{2} {SO}_{4}}} + \underset{Water}{2 H_{2} O} + \underset{Carbon dioxide}{{CO}_{2}}$

Conclusion: This activity shows that all the acids react with metal carbonate and metal bicarbonate with the liberation of carbon dioxide gas, water and respective salt.
