Population refers to the total number of individuals of a species in a given area at a particular time. Some of the characteristics of a population are as follows:

i. Birth rate or Natality rate: When the increase in individuals is expressed per unit time, it is called birth or natality rate.

ii. Death rate or mortality rate: The loss of individuals due to death in a population under given environmental conditions is termed mortality. When it is expressed per unit time, it is called the mortality rate.

iii. Age distribution: The relative abundance of the organisms of various age groups in the population IS called age distribution of population.

iv. Migration: The movement of individuals into (immigration) or outside (emigration) the existing population is known as migration.
