The Parliament is the legislative organ of the Government. It consists of the President, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The President is the nominal executive of the country. The Parliament of India is bicameral with an upper house and a lower house.

The upper house or the Rajya Sabha which is also known as the Council of States is a permanent house, as it cannot be dissolved at once. The members are elected or nominated for a term of six years and one-third of the house retires every two years. The lower house or the Lok Sabha is known as the House of People. The members are the elected representatives of the people for a term of five years.
