Most plants are classified on the basis of their size and structure into the following three types:

Herbs: Small plants (less than one metre in height) with green and soft stems are called herbs. For example, wheat, paddy, cabbage, grass, tulsi, coriander, mustard plants are herbs.

Shrubs: Shrubs are medium-sized plants (one to three metres in height) with thin branches starting from just above the ground. Their stem is hard and thin. For example, bougainvillaea, lemon, henna (heena), rose plants are shrubs.

Trees: Trees are tall and large plants (more than three metres in height) with hard and woody stems. They have one main stem (called trunk). The trunk gives out many branches at a certain height. Branches carry leaves. For example, neem, mango, and coconut are trees.

Note:

Creepers and Climbers: Some plants are different from the herbs, shrubs and trees. For example, plants like mint (pudina) and gourd have weak stems that spread on the ground and cannot stand upright. Such plants are called creepers.
Some plants like peas, and money plant have weak stems that take support of the neighbouring plant/support to climb up. Such plants are called climbers.
