The blood is a fluid connective tissue, consists of blood plasma and blood cells including red blood cells, white blood cells, and blood platelets. The blood performs the following functions:

1. Transport: The red blood cells contain a respiratory pigment called the haemoglobin. The haemoglobin transports the oxygen in the form oxy-haemoglobin, and carbon dioxide in the form carbamino-haemoglobin.

2. Transport of nutrients: The red blood cells and blood plasma transport the glucose, vitamins, minerals, and several nutrients to the body cells to provide energy for several living activities.

3. Removal of wastes: The plasma transports the organic waste originated by the cells present in it, towards the kidneys. In turn, they are responsible for filtering and eliminating them through the urine.

4. Regulation: The plasma serves the function of maintaining constant different physiological situations, such as body temperature, blood glucose, blood oxygen level.

5. Phagocytosis: The white blood cells engulf the harmful particles and provide protection from pathogens. These cells also produce antibodies against any antigen.
