The magnets have two poles, north and south poles. As we know that like poles repel and unlike poles attract. The north pole of the magnet will always point towards the geographic north of the earth. This happens because the earth itself behaves like a giant magnet. It has its magnetic poles near the geographic north and south poles. The south pole of this giant bar magnet is near the geographic north pole and the north pole of this giant bar magnet is near the geographic south pole. Hence, if a magnet is freely suspended, its north pole is attracted by the south pole of the earth magnet, and so it points towards the geographic north pole. Similarly, its south pole would point towards the geographic south pole. A freely suspended magnet always points in the geographic north-south direction. This property of magnets can be used in finding the directions.

Take a bar magnet, thread, and set-up to hang the magnet. Follow the below mentioned procedure:-

1. Hang a bar magnet freely using a thread.

2. Note the direction when it becomes stable.

3. Gently disturb the magnet again and observe.

The magnet becomes stable in the same direction. You can see that the freely suspended magnet always points to the geographic north-south direction. This is due to the magnetic force exerted by the earth on the suspended magnet.
