The capacity to do work is known as energy. This energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only be transformed from one form to another. There are mainly five types of energy, they are

1. Mechanical energy is the energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position or its motion. It is the sum of the kinetic energy and potential energy. For example, a moving car possesses this energy.

2. Chemical energy is the energy stored in fuel-wood, coal, petrol, cooking gas, etc. For example, this energy stored in the cell, makes the bulb glow.

3. Thermal energy is also known as heat energy. In a steam engine, this thermal energy gets converted into mechanical energy.

4. Light energy is a form of energy because of which we are able to see things. For example, the use of photocell helps to convert light energy into electrical energy.

5. Sound energy is produced by the vibration of bodies. The sound that is heard from whistles, horns etc are examples of this energy.
