Write oxidation reactions of potassium permanganate.

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidising agent. The chemical equations to show the oxidative properties of potassium permanganate are:

(i) Potassium permanganate reacts with hydrogen sulphide and liberates sulphur. The equation for the chemical reaction is:

$3 H_{2} S + 2 {KMnO}_{4} \to 3 S + 2 {MnO}_{2}$

(ii) Potassium permanganate reacts with sulphurous acid to form sulphuric acid. The equation for the reaction is:

$2 {KMnO}_{4} + 5 H_{2} {SO}_{3} + 6 H^{+} \to 2 {Mn}^{2 +} + 5 H_{2} {SO}_{4} + 3 H_{2} O$

(iii) Potassium permanganate oxidises oxalic acid and liberates carbon dioxide gas. The equation for the reaction is:

$5 H_{2} C_{2} O_{4} + 2 {KMnO}_{4} + 16 H^{+} \to 10 {CO}_{2} + 8 H_{2} O + 2 {Mn}^{2 +}$

(iv) Potassium permanganate oxidises hydrogen peroxide to water molecule. The equation for the chemical reaction is:

$2 {KMnO}_{4} + 3 H_{2} {SO}_{4} + 5 H_{2} O_{2} \to K_{2} {SO}_{4} + 2 {MnSO}_{4} + 8 H_{2} O + 5 O_{2}$
