Smog

The word smog is a combination of two words smoke and fog. It was named so because for the first time it was observed to be formed by the condensation of some kind of fog on the carbon particles present in the smoke produced by the combustion of fuels like coal and petroleum.

There are two types of smog: (i) Classical smog and (ii) Photochemical smog

(i) Classical smog: It is a mixture of fog, smoke and sulphur dioxide $({SO}_{2})$ gas, it was first observed in London in $1952$ killing about $4000$ people and for this reason, it is also called 'London smog'.

(ii) Photochemical smog: Photochemical smog, which is also known as “Los Angeles smog,” occurs most prominently in urban areas that have large numbers of automobiles, and it requires neither smoke nor fog. It was observed in Los Angeles in $1950$ . It is formed from the action of sunlight on nitrogen dioxide and hydrocarbons released by automobiles and factories.
