Aliphatic or Aromatic primary amines react with nitrous acid to form diazonium salts and the nitrous acid that used in the reaction is prepared by the reaction of $N a N O_{2}$ with a mineral acid such as $H C l$ at low temperatures $(273 - 278 K)$ . So, the conversion of primary aromatic amines into diazonium salts is known as diazotisation. Primary aliphatic amines form highly unstable alkyldiazonium salts but, primary aromatic amines form arenediazonium salts which are stable for a short time in solution at low temperatures $(273 - 278 K)$ .

For example, on treatment with $N a N O_{2}$ and $H C l$ at $273 - 278 K,$ Aniline produces the compound Benzene diazonium chloride with $N a C l$ and $H_{2} O$ .
$R - N H_{2} \underset{N a N O_{2} / 2 H C l}{\to} \underset{D i a z o n i u m c h l o r i d e}{R - \overset{\oplus}{N_{2}} C l} + NaCl + 2 H_{2} O . C_{6} H_{5} - N H_{2} \underset{{NaNO}_{2} / 2 HCl}{\to} \underset{Benzene diazonium chloride}{C_{6} H_{5} - \overset{\oplus}{N_{2}} Cl} + NaCl + 2 H_{2} O .$
