Administration of Pataliputra: Pataliputra was the capital of the Maurya Empire. The administration of the city was looked after by a committee of thirty members. This committee was divided into six boards. Each board consisted of five members, and they looked after a specific department. These departments were: i)comfort and security of foreigners

ii)registration of births and deaths

iii)trade and commerce

iv)industry

v)inspection of manufactured goods and

vi)collection of taxes

Sources of revenue: Land revenue was fixed between one-fourth and one-sixth of the production of the crops. It was the main source of income of the Maurya Empire. Revenue was also acquired from trade. Important inland trading centres were Pataliputra, Ujjain, Taxila, and Broach.Water tax was also collected, which is mentioned in Arthashastra.
