During heating the particles (molecules) of the substances move apart and become loosely arranged. This kind of change is known as expansion.

Examples of expansion in solids: Iron tools are heated before they are fitted with wooden handles. Due to heating, the iron tools expand and the ring present at the centre of such tools increase in diameter. Thus, the handles can be easily fixed into the ring.

Examples of expansion in liquid: In a liquid, expansion occurs when the liquid is heated, the particles move around each other faster, and expand. For example when the milk boils, it spills out of the container if the burner is not turned off. This is due to expansion.

Examples of expansion in gases: Inflated balloons burst when kept in bright sunlight for a long time. This is because air absorbs heat from sunlight and expands. The expansion of air inside the balloon causes it to burst.
