Describe the structure of the Nucleus with the help of a labelled diagram.

The nucleus is the controlling centre of a eukaryotic cell. It is bound by a double membrane that encloses various structures like nucleoplasm, nucleolus and chromosomes. The nuclear membrane is a double-layered structure that surrounds the matrix present inside the nucleus. The space between these two layers is called perinuclear space. The outer nuclear membrane is connected to the endoplasmic reticulum. The covering of the nucleus has holes formed due to the fusion of inner and outer nuclear membranes. These are surpassed by the protein complexes which allow the passage of substances into and out of the nucleus. Nucleoplasm is the matrix present inside the nucleus. It is also called karyoplasm which contains nucleolus and chromatin. The nucleolus is a non-membrane bound structure that acts as a site for ribosomal RNA synthesis. A loose network of the nucleoprotein fibres during the interphase of the cell cycle is called chromatin. Chromatin contains DNA and some basic proteins called histones, some non-histone proteins and RNA.
