The procedure of the lab activity are as follows:

Aim: To understand the lateral shift of light rays through a glass slab.

Material required: Plank, Chart paper, Clamps, Scale, Pencil. Thin glass slab and Pins.

Procedure: Initially, we place a piece of a chart on the plank and clamp it. Then we place a glass slab in the middle of the paper and will draw a boarder line along the edges of the slab by using a pencil and naming it as $A, B, C, D$ . Then will draw a normal line to $A B$ at mid point $O$ and an incident ray to the normal with an incident $< i$ . On the the incident ray will fix the pins at $P$ and $Q$ and looking into other side and will fix two other points $R$ and $S$ such that they appear in a straight line.

Observations: The angle of incident and emergence are equal. $(∠ i = ∠ e)$

Conclusion: The incident and emergent ray $(P Q, R S)$ are parallel.

The distance between the parallel rays $(P Q, R S)$ is called Lateral shift.
