Processing of fibres into wool involves five major steps:

Shearing: The process of collecting hair of a sheep is called shearing. The hair is sheared using an instrument similar to shaving machine used by a barber. This process does not hurt the sheep as its uppermost layer of skin is made up of dead cells.

Scouring: In this step, the fleece obtained from shearing is washed to remove dirt and dust.

Sorting and grading: Sorting is the process where the damaged wool after scouring are carefully observed and removed. And the fleeces are sorted based in their texture, length and colour. This process is called grading. Grading of wool determines the price of the wool. Grading of wool is also known as fineness.

Carding: In this process, the wool is brushed to remove or straighten tangled wool fibres. Carding is also done using straightening machine which has a series of metal teeth that straighten the fibres, without causing any breakage. Then the burrs are removed, and the processed hair is again scoured and dried.

Dyeing, spinning and weaving: Here, the woollen fibres are coloured using dyes and chemicals. Then the colourful fibres are straightened, combed, stretched and twisted to form a thing yarn or thread. Using a spinning machine, the thin fibres are joined together to form a single strand of yarn.
