The Fabaceae family is a large and economically important family of flowering plants (angiosperms). This is also known as Leguminosae or Papilionaceae, commonly known as the pea or legume family. The family includes 600 genera and 13,000 species of dicotyledonous plants. These plants are widely distributed all over the world. Mostly the plants are herbs, however shrubs, trees and climbers are also common.

The plants possess stem, root and leaves as vegetative parts which are not included in the sexual reproduction.

Roots: These plants have tap root system, i.e., the roots are formed from the radicle of the embryo. In this case, the primary root (root formed from radicle) persists and secondary and tertiary lateral roots are formed. The lateral branches usually contain many small swelling called root nodules. These roots are known as nodulated roots. These nodules contain many minutes symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria, Rhizobium.

Stem: It is the ascending part of the plant that bears leaves, branches, etc. In Fabaceae, plants usually have herbaceous or woody stems. These are branched, erect or climbing.

Leaves: Leaves are the green lateral appendages that are the sites of photosynthesis. Some plants possess simple leaf with a single and undivided lamina. Pinnately compound leaves are also seen in some plants in which the lamina is incised and the leaflets are arranged on both sides of the rachis. The veins are arranged in the form of a network called reticulate venation. The leaf base is pulvinus and it bears two lateral outgrowths called stipules.
