The three functions of political parties are as follows:

(A) Contest elections. It selects candidates to contest elections from various constituencies. The parties usually select those candidates who hold a better chance of winning.

(B) Conduct election campaigns for its candidates. It helps to formulate public opinion. The parties explain various issues and problems to the people. Each party tries to convince people that its policies are the best. They make use of public meetings, processions, demonstrations and the press for this.

(C) Give expression to public opinion and place it before the government. It forms the government after winning the majority in the elections. It functions as the opposition if it fails to secure a majority.
