Yashika touched the rod to the cap of the electroscope to find that the divergence of the gold leaf decreased. What should she infer about the charge status of the rod?

The leaves diverged because of repulsive force because of charges. The diverged leaves indicate that the electroscope is either positively or negatively charged.
When Yashika touched the rod to the brass cap of the gold-leaf electroscope, the divergence of the gold leaves decreases indicating that rod and gold-leaf electroscope are oppositely charged. Hence, there are two cases possible:

Case 1: If the electroscope is positively charged, then rod must be negatively charged.

Case 2: If the electroscope is negatively charged, then rod must be positively charged.

Yashika concludes that rod is definitely charged.
