Why C 4 and C 3 plants are so called?

The glucose formation takes place in the biosynthetic phase (dark reaction) of photosynthesis. In most plants, the primary carbon dioxide acceptor during dark reaction is a 5C compound, RuBP that undergo carboxylation to form two molecules of 3C phosphoglyceric acid (PGA). It is the first stable product, hence it is called C 3 cycle. Such types of plants in which the first stable product is a 3-carbon PGA is called C 3 plants. Certain plants possess a special kind of anatomical structure known as Kranz anatomy. In these plants, a type of dark reaction occurs in which phosphoenol pyruvic acid (PEP) undergoes carboxylation in the presence of an enzyme PEP carboxylase, known as C 4 cycle. The first stable product in this cycle is a four-carbon compound oxaloacetic acid (OAA), Hence. C 4 plants called so.
