When the seeds are soaked in water for a day, some will float and some will sink. The seeds which absorb the water will sink and seeds which will not absorb water will float. The seeds which sink at the bottom are healthy seeds. Unhealthy (damaged) seeds will float on the top of the water as they become hollow and lighter than the healthy ones.

The seeds which float on the surface of the water will not germinate as they are damaged due to the attack of insects or microbes like bacteria, fungi, etc. So, they have to be removed.

The seeds are soaked in water to check whether the seeds have the compatibility for production of crops or not. The seeds take time to absorb water and settle down. So, to get a better result, the seeds are soaked in water for a day.
