Neurons or nerve cells are structural and functional units of the human nervous system. Neurons are electrically excitable cells that transfer information to different parts of the body in the form of electrical impulses or action potential. These electrical impulses are transmitted along the axon of the neuron and transferred to another neuron through the synapse. Hormones are also called chemical messengers produced and secreted by various endocrine glands. After being released from endocrine glands, these chemicals travel to target glands of the body through blood. Speed of action As neurons are electrically excitable cells and the mode of transmission is through electrical impulse, the speed of transmission of information through neurons is very fast. After being released from the endocrine glands, hormones are carried to target organs through blood. After reaching the target organs, hormones bind to receptors present on the plasma membrane or inside the cell to exert their actions. Thus, the speed of action hormones carries out is slow. Duration of effect As an electrical mode of transmission is one of the fastest modes, the duration of effect by neuron will be very less. As for a hormone to exert its action, processes are involved such as travelling in blood, binding in receptors, modulating its structure, etc., duration of effect caused by a hormone is more.
