The natural process by which CO 2 enters the atmosphere is decomposition. Decomposition is the process by which dead organisms like plants or animals are broken down into small organic matter, which releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, by the action of microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, etc. CO 2 can also enter the atmosphere naturally by the process of respiration. It is the process of breaking down of food inside cells to release energy. The man-made process by which CO 2 enters the atmosphere is combustion of fossil fuels which yields carbon dioxide and water vapour.
